I don't believe animals should be granted "rights," but I am against treating them as a means to a end. Sometimes, I try not to eat meat, but I end up relapsing, and then I find myself back to my old eating habits. There have been times when I've actually thought about what I was eating while eating an egg; the "thought" made me feel like a pre-historic caveman. I believe the way I was raised has plenty to do with my obsession with red meats, I guess I'm a "hard determinist." I'm fine with scientists using animals for scientific research because the research often leads to unique findings. I am totally against the idea of abusing animals, or killing them for their furs. Humans are the planet's leaders, but we don't always act like it. If humans keep failing to replace their evil deeds with good ones, soon "Mother Nature" will replace us.

when I eat meat, I do think a lot about animals. However, Im still eating meat because I see meat as my nutrients, not because I like meat. I used to eat whatever comes on my table and loved stakes, but now I try not eat so much. The reason I do so is I believe that there will be rights for animals. Also, I think it is agains our eco system that only humans are not in the part of food chain (we are not eaten by any animals). Since we are cognitive animals and able to maniplate signs and languages, we can communicate better than other animals but still, they have their own communication system that it is our ego not to think about them just because they do not use languages. I am not saying that we should stop comsuming animal's meat because the choices are totaly up to individuals. However, it is beneficial for us and other animas that human consume very little amout of meat. We, humans, are also animals, I don't think it is right to take others lives just because they do not use same language or same brain fanction like us.

I personally do not think that there is anything wrong with eating meat. I probably eat chicken at every meal, mainly because it is nutritious. I usually don’t think of the animal while I am eating it. Partly because it is some what upsetting in a way that an innocent creature had to die to feed me but unfortunately that is the way it goes when you are on the top of the food chain. I do think animals should have rights though and the one thing that does bother me is these companies that do animal testing. For example, a certain shampoo company testing its products on animals. That does bother me and I believe that it is cruel. It may seem that I am contradicting myself because I am eating meat and these companies are only testing their products on them but to me it is different. In the end, I think that animals should be treated with respect even the ones that we consume.

Well, I guess that's some progress!

when am eating meat i do not think about the animal that was killed. i just enjoy myself eating the delicious meat on my plate. i don't believe that animals should have animal rights but i do think that they way we treat them should change they way we kill them in the farms they come from and how we treat them in farms. But i do agree about how scientific are using them to find cures for diseases but i don't like the way humans treat there pets at home. mistreating them at home not feeding them leaving them in the backyard with a chain around the neck of a dog where their is no food for them to eat. where they have scars or how some people use dogs to fight especially pit bulls. The way they treat animals on farms i didn;t like at all because they do things to them that is uncalled for.

This subject is one that I care about very much. I am an animal lover and I really hate to see them abused in any way. I do eat meat and I enjoy it very much but I have drastically changed where I get my meat from. Maybe because it gives me a better peace of mind to know that I don't contribute to the abuse animals are put through in the process of getting to our grocery stores for consumption. Animals may not have a voice of their own or be able to use language to express their pain but that still doesn't give us the right to abuse them. Everything living should be treated with respect...animal, plant or whatever it is. When I consume meat I do think about where it came from because it's important to think about it. I don't think going through life oblivious or looking the other way is an option. Animals are obviously abused in other ways as far as animal testing and domestic abuse. Animal testing is really sad and i'm definatly for the companies who find alternate solutions to test their products. When it comes to having an animal as a pet, I think anybody should take on that responsibility if they do not have the time, means, or respect for the animal. If people dont respect animals then they shouldnt have them or be allowed to.
I think everyone can make a difference by thinking about it. If you start to pay more attention to what you eat and where it came from you begin to care more. Meat is definatly a nutrient for us and we will forever eat it i'm sure but no one needs to do anything to an excess. Too much of anything is not good...and thats where the problem is.

I believe that animals should not be mistreated. I find it difficult to justify the use of animals in laboratory tests for the sake of “guinea pigs”. Surely, one would not want the same for oneself. I cannot know whether the majority of animals feel that they are entitled to certain rights, but it is very reasonable to assume that such a being would not volunteer itself to be mistreated in any way. Though perhaps many may feel that a human being is entitled to rights that an animal has no use for, it is sickening to treat an animal as a ragdoll, or as a means to an end.

I often think of an animal when I am eating meat. To me, it is something I cannot avoid. This stems from my awareness of the conditions that often lead up to the meal on my plate, and the system behind such t hat allows it to happen. I grew up eating meat, and the United States features meat as a staple of its diet. It is difficult to escape the system when cheap options are offered. To change an individual diet, one would have to change the mentality of the person as well. This would motivate further changes, but, until such is done, it is difficult to move someone to radically alter their lifestyle.

I think that animals should have certain rights, for example if an item is almost extinct they should be treated well and let them reproduce so that they won't go extinct. Other rights that they should have are not being beaten to death and no dog fighting. Other then that I don't see what other rights they should receive. I am a animal lover and I especially love dogs. It pains me to see them treated cruelty. They say that a dog is a man's best friend, and I truly believe that. As for the eating topic, I eat meat because we humans are also consider animals and just like other animals, we eat each other. However though I only agree to that to a certain extent. I like to preserve the food chain, and not alter to a big degree.

I’ve never owned a pet so I wouldn’t say I’m as sympathetic as people who have shared a bond with an animal. However, I do feel anything that is classified as living shouldn’t be tampered with in anyway. Today I saw them cutting down trees on the bus ride home and I felt as if it was morally wrong. Especially when the living organism is inept to moving or defending itself. We have become a coalesce of self-serving egomaniacs. I am in accordance with the abolitionism movement, animal rights are necessary for some of the more deranged individual in our society. But setting property rights on another living organism is unnerving and should be considered taboo. I remember watching a movie (“The Future Of Food“) on the seed companies who patented a genetically engineered microbe(living organism) and subsequently patented other forms of life. What give us this right to own the rights of another living bean? When we make a new friend, we don’t make a contract or negotiate the terms of the relationship, why so with different species? Why is there this illusion of superiority? Some might argue because we are rational, that we are superior and unrivaled. It’s plausible to consider a gorilla or dolphin as a person (not human being) are they not considered rational as well?
As for becoming a meat-free society, if meat was developed and produced in a more natural fashion. It wouldn’t be detrimental to the ecosystem or our health, , therefore I withdraw from the view of quitting meat. Beside we are inherently omnivores, as far as we can tell from the eating habits of cavemen. Who are we to go against our inherent eating habits?

I do not defend animal cruelty. This doesn't mean that we cannot eat animals, hence all be vegetarians. For there are ways to kill an animal and not be cruel to it (Think Avatar). For those who defend animal cruelty because it occurs in nature by animals killing each other, in my opinion, is not a valid argument. Since these animals do not have communication in the form we do or morals, like we do, or rights like we do. They are primitive and most of what occurs in their minds are how they will eat. This is why those who have no shelter, no clothes, no food are very primitive in such that they rob for the things they need, regardless of whether it is wrong or right. This is mostly an animal way of thinking. Therefore we cannot blame them. Lets stop animal cruelty because I believe it's a disgrace to human beings' intelligence.

I think that we are far past the question whether or not animals have rights. The issue has become a case of semantics and intentional ignorance. Whether or not we can understand or even attempt to understand whether or not animals feel or deserve the pain and death we force on them. At least in my opinion it is not our place to decide whether or not their treatment is ethical; they are living organisms and by that fact alone they are entitled the same free will that every other living organism has. The fact that they are lower on the food chain or inferior beings according to our standards isn't even an issue in my eyes. As far as I'm concerned we are all the same and equal but the majority of us are willingly ignorant to that fact. Ironically in terms of racial background it was not until we learned of our obvious equity that we were able to make a giant leap in terms of social, ethical, and intellectual growth.

Being raised in a country like Haiti, one really does not any choice when we are given something to eat. Now that I am old enough to make my food choices,I several time try to change my eating habits, specially when it comes to meat, but in my opinion due to the way i was raised i keep going back to my bad eating habit. We should definetely try to better the way that we treat animals now these days for many reasons,a reason why we should why we should treat these animals better is because, one can argue that these are creatures that we found here. why should we think that it is ok to treat them however we want to?

I ‘m a meat lover, when I seat to eat, I don’t think about the animal that has been killed. This is the first time in my life that I think about this. I believe that we as humans need to understand the importance of animals in our lives. I strongly believe that animals should have right, and I know this might sound contradicting since I’m a meat lover, but I think everything should be with limitations and what I’m trying to say with this is that I don’t agree when people treat animals without respect for example those people who abuse of their dogs, cats, or other pets or animals. I think we as humans need them and they need us. We all are part of a planet call Earth, and we need each other to live. And about the other animals such as chicken, cows, pigs and others I think we shouldn’t be killing them the way they do and let them grow in farms not putting hormones to them. Also I think it is our responsibility to learn how to balance the way we eat, that way our diet doesn’t depend that much on them but, fruits, and vegetables.

Though I have chosen a plant-based diet, my perspective on this is that food is necessary for survival. The choice of food is an individual choice so the discord that we feel towards eating meat or not is our own. Is our well-being really contingent upon what we eat? Or might it be what we're thinking and all the worrying about the choices of others that keeps us in a state of mental and physical discord? We are all drawn to the food that is best for us individually therefore, our personal preferences are not and will never be identical. After all, it is highly improbable that there will ever be a "one size fits all" food choice, behavior or any other preference. That said, would it not be more satisfying to just enjoy life rather than spending so much of it worrying about death and suffering or the life choices of others?

Not to push the issue, but it seems that we get comfortable with explanations to justify our habits.

Just to problematize the issue a little bit. The slave owners of the south knew about the abolitionists since the beginning of the 19th Century, yet they kept on with their plantations, In fact they resisted the idea of liberating their slaves. This is one of the reasons that precipitated the civil war.

Why was it so difficult or them to see that slavery was wrong? Answer: They had a vested interest they were not ready to sacrifice.

Furthermore: Can we say that they didn't see it or is it that they didn't want to see it?

In my opinion, I find that it is wrong that animals are constantly being treated cruelly; just because they are not able to defend themselves. Many animals have no choice but to be killed without retaliating back. I believe that animals do feel pain; they just have a different way of expressing themselves when they’re being hurt. With topics like this, it makes me don’t want to consume anything that comes from an animal, but when I’m eating chicken or just meat in general, I don’t stop to think how these animals are being killed for me to eat them. I basically think of how good they smell or tastes when there are cooked. As humans, we should not rely too much on eating meat all the time but instead have a balance in what we eat every day. I also want to add that, because we’re raised on eating meat, we don’t find anything wrong in animals being killed and we eating it, until the issue is brought up. This topic gave me something to think about.

who are we to say that animals dont deserve rights. humans are animals too and we have right why should animals. animals provide with security and food and companionship. hy would we neglect them as part of our society. animals deserve as much respect as humans do. and should be treated with dignity and respect that they deserve.

Growing up in the ghetto there were rules one had to follow, especially in my household. Rule Number was to eat whatever I give you (my mother would say) and that’s what my brother, sisters and I did. I was never given the opportunity to eat anything else than meat in my house. If I did not eat what my mother cooked I would starve for the day or the week. In addition, I was forced to inherent the need to eat meat. My mother and father were both born in Haiti and traveled to live in the Bahamas and United States. Since, then they have only learned to eat meat and grains from their parents (my grandparents). As for my grandparent they have learned to eat meat and grains from their parents (my great- grand parents) and who knows where they got the idea from. As, you can see my family was never educated about saving animals or trees and eating right. However, as my family begins to grow and learn about the health effects about eating only meat or red meat from Doctor Oz. We have lessened our intake of meat and start to eat different varieties of food like fresh fish, cornmeal, vegetables etc. However, as I think about it, honestly I have never taught about the animals I ate because I was never educated it and about their rights. In my culture, we always eat meat and are food must be hot with peppers. So, this was emblem in my culture and if one was against this, you’ll be considered an outsider and you’ll starve to death.

Hence, I believe our society needs to be educated about this because most of us are from the islands and we have different traditions from America’s. If one learns, that eating a bucket of fried chicken every week for dinner can give you major health problems this can save many lives and increase our life span which is really low among all countries in the world!

To begin with, I would like to state that I have no doubt in my mind that all humans would benifit from adapting a vegetarian lifestyle. It is a healthier way of living , and it is way better for the enviroment. Since many people know this, and still eat meat based products, I can only assume that it is due to their spoilled taste buds that these choices are made. Even with this view of mine, I do not believe that animals should have the same rights as humans, but they should deffinitly be granted more rights than they posess at the moment... the most important being the right to life in their natural habitats.I could see, however that it would be incredibly difficult for animals to understand the "rights" that we gave them (assuming they would be the same as our fellow humans). Consider taking a monkey to court, or making a deer press the crosswalk at an intersection. It simply wouldn't suffice. I do not belive it is our rights ( as humans) to eat animals, wear their skins, or put them in captivity for our entertainment. My belief in this is due to simple logic. We should not exploit animals because it is unnecessary, and it is harmful to the enviroment, and many different animals. There are so many other sources of protein (for example:quiona, beans, nuts, tofu), and technology has created so many ways to cook foods to make them texturally similar to meat. I would also like to add that eating meat and believing they should have rights , and not be treated cruelly(like so many people posted) is a fallacy. Death is the ultimate cruelity.

Honestly, when it comes to me eating meat i didnt really think about none of these issues. The only time i started paying a little attention to what i ate was after the post about the pigs being farmed and that was for hot dogs.I must admitt that i love eating meat because eating meat was what i was raised doing. If i was brought up in a different way then I would probably thing differently.I do believe that animals deserve rights because all living things that share this place call planet earth should be able to live with rights as we humans do.Suppose the tables were turned and we humans were at the bottom of the chain,am sure we would want our share of rights and not to be mistreated.I just contradicted myself because I feel animals deserve rights but yet I love eating meat.I feel in order to make a change we must first admitt that there is a problem.I feel that no animals should be mistreated are abused but this is how our society advanced to put us where we are at now with animal testings. Its sad but this is inherent to our generation. To the scientist who use animlas to cure diseases I support but to the people who abuse animals through physical contact and neglect,I am against.

and to the question about slavery...i truy believe that they didnt want to see because what person in their right mind would treat other humans beings the way they treated black people and not noticed what was going on...it shows they didnt want to see...

I do believe that animals should have rights, and I disagreed with those that think that just because animals don't complain they shouldn't have right. just because we are at the top of the food chain and our brain have evolved different from other creatures does not mean that we as humans are superior to any other living organism habiting earth. But how do we define rights? acording to the dictionary they are normative principals of freedom or entitlement.... well animals do deserve freedom and since they have no voice to speack against us we should take care of them.
personately i dont eat meat products often, maybe once a month to get the nutrients that my body need, and i think i am doing the right thing because we do eat one another in this world, thats how the food chain and evolution goes... But kill an animal and eat meat everyday nad throw away the rest just because u are full and kill another one the next day to do the same, i think that there should be a law prohiviting the consumption of some animals because of that. we are killing to kill not to live and survive....
